gnome-libs-1.2.8 of redhat 7.1 support XIM and multichar.
and, alas, that just a patch of redhat only.
and I won't try any chicky dumbing.
so I just use 1.2.8 not 1.2.13 the latest.
enough to go with other latest gnome packages.
